The Captains Coffee

Coffee Art

Written by Denny & Priscilla

Recently the work of two very talented people came to our attention.  How?  Well, to tell you the truth, Priscilla saw their work, loved it, bought it and then told me we needed to offer their works to you on our web site.  Pretty prosaic beginning for our first foray into the world of coffee related art!  But these works are really wonderful.

When we first saw Julie Cefaratti's poseable sculpture figures, we knew you'd love them as much as we do, so we begged Ms. Cefaratti to allow us to offer them on our web site. Each one of a kind figure is made using baked clay and a sturdy metal wire "skeleton" to hold everything together. Plus, you can move their limbs, and they each have a unique personality. These are not mass produced. Each figure is personally sculpted by Ms. Cefaratti. There are no duplicates. The Coffee House Masquerade Figures are posable sculptures clothed with unique handmade outfits individual to each piece and finished with a few strokes of paint, and, of course, a head full of The Captain's Coffee beans. Since each figure is hand sculpted, there is some variation, but they are approximately 16-18 inches high.

Erik Mowery's coffee grinders are a wonderful combination of old fashioned hand powered mechanisms mounted in a single solid wooden base.  The base hides a glass catch-jar, so the grinder is as funcitonal as it is beautiful.  These are limited edition grinders.  Each is made by hand using a variety of tools and techniques.  The finish is hand rubbed mineral oil and beeswax--a combination that not only lets the natural beauty of the wood emerge, but protects it while being food safe as well.  The craftsmanship is exquisite.

High Price Coffee Woes

Written by Denny

The following is a reprint from an article I wrote for the most recent edition of The Captain's Coffee News.  For about the last year and a half coffee prices have risen almost daily.  Obviously for consumers the main impact of high coffee prices is, well, high coffee prices.  But it goes beyond price.  Read on...   Denny

If you take a look at on line retailers to the home coffee roasting market you’ll notice that virtually everyone has fewer coffees to offer than in the past. A lot of factors enter into this, but one of the main reasons is supply. As much as we’d all like to do so, home coffee roasting is such a sliver of a market that it makes buying directly from farmers in far flung places like Sumatra and Ethiopia and even Honduras virtually impossible. So we all depend on reputable importers to purchase coffee that we divvy up along with commercial and artisan roasters of varying sizes.

Here is where that nasty old economic reality rears its ugly head. Coffee is a commodity and is traded as such. For a lot of reasons (of which greed and fear are all too prominent) commodity traders have had a central and key role in dramatically driving up the price of those coffee containers. Importers are paying basically twice what they were just over a year ago for a container. Bankers tend to be pretty conservative when it comes to lending, especially to someone who deals in the volatile world of commodities, and they have been very reluctant to increase the credit limit they have extended to coffee importers. Translation: importers can buy half the amount of coffee they did before prices went berserk. Obviously something has to give.

Rats! I forgot to order...

Written by Priscilla

It happens all the time.  You put your coffee order in, click on the "confirm order" button and right at that instant realize that you forgot to order something else.  Oh, well, you don't want to pay an extra shipping charge (although our subsidized shipping is VERY reasonable) so you just let it go.  Well, how about this:  If you realize you forgot something, go back to the web site and put your order in again.  This time, select the "I will pick up my order" shipping option for which there is no charge.  We'll probably figure it out and do it anyway, but if you want to leave us a note in the remarks section just before confirming the order reminding us to combine it with your other order, that would be great.  This way you get ALL the stuff you originally wanted without paying an unnecessary shipping charge.  Works for us--how's that sound to you?

Oh--one thing--if the additional stuff you added won't fit in the original shipping method you selected (Priority Mail Flat Rate Box comes to mind) or puts you in a higher weight class for our flat rate shipping than your orignal order, we'll just give you a call and discuss the options and work it out.  Pretty simple.

Behmor Announces Tech Support Policy Change

Written by Denny

Today Behmor announced a policy change regarding tech support that in just about any other company would have made us nervous.  They are no longer taking phone in tech support requests but are asking everyone to email the tech question or problem.  Here's a link to the page on Behmor's web site to get to Tech Support:  http://www.behmor.com/tech_support.html.

The reason this didn't bother us is because we know that Behmor will answer your email and they'll do it promptly.  What they are trying to accomplish is the establishment of a reliable paper trail from the initial contact to the final problem resolution.  This way your question, warranty/service issue or problem won't get lost in the shuffle, but will be handled quickly and professionally.  If you need to contact Behmor Tech Support, have your serial number and date of purchase handy.  If you need the date of purchase and you bought it from us, just send us an email note and we'll get it right back to you--just like Behmor, we answer our emails and we try to do it promptly.  Maybe all that caffeine has something to do with it.

Free Shipping on Orders of $200 or More!

Written by Priscilla

We are offering free shipping on orders of $200 or more to destinations in the Lower 48 States for a limited time.  How long?  We haven't decided for sure, but it won't go on forever, so if you want to take advantage of it, you'd better move quickly.

This offer does not include shipments to  Alaska, Hawaii, or US Territories.  However, our web site isn't smart enough to figure out you folks don't qualify--so if you place an order of $200 or more, we'll have to get in touch with you to arrange shipping.

For the rest of you, this is a really good deal.  Hard to get less expensive than "free".  If you've been thinking about a Behmor 1600 or Gene Cafe, or just need a lot of coffee, now is the time!

By the way, we don't ship internationally--this includes Canada and Mexico.
