We're a Little Greener

Written by Priscilla

I've known Denny is nuts for a long time.  The guy likes dry processed coffees, for crying out loud!  So when he came to me and explained that he wanted to change the bags we use to ship coffee from a heavy duty zip lock plastic bag to a tin-tie paper bag that costs over twice as much, I really thought he'd completely lost it.  Well, maybe not!

Recently we had a rash of plastic bags that split open during shipping.  As soon as we discovered the problem, all we could do was to throw away all the bags we had on hand and replace them.  Expensive and wasteful, but necessary.  We had a couple of other episodes over the years, so it was time to do something.  And while we were at it, how about something bio-degradable and compostable?  The solution seems to be a glassine lined paper bag with a fold over tin-tie.

Glassine is a paper product (although it looks like plastic) so it decomposes.  When laminated to heavy duty paper, it makes a really nice bag that is reclosable.  An added benefit is that the coffee labels stick to the bag better, and you can easily make notes on the bag itself.  Over time, we have made other more expensive but environmentally friendly packing decisions.  Some items need to be packed in pellets.  We switched from Styrofoam to pellets made from corn starch.  They completely dissolve when wet.  We also started using kraft paper instead of bubble wrap in all but a few cases.

We continue to try to make our Eco-footprint a little smaller.  Our new paper bags aren't much, sure.  But they are a little bit.  And it all adds up.  Besides, they have sort of a cool retro look.  So does Denny now that I think about it!

Send me a note and let me know what you think about our new bags.

Blessings

Priscilla
